Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance refers to a type of health insurance which provides payment incase of death or loss of one or more parts of the body as a result of an accident. In addition, it also covers death or dismemberment caused by an accident. Unlike life insurance, AD&D only pays for death caused by accidents. It would not pay for death caused by illness. The premium is also lower because the possibility of accidental deaths is relatively lower than the natural deaths.
Similarly, the component dismemberment in the term refers to the loss of two limbs or complete loss of sight resulting in blindness etc It is also a rider or attached endorsement to a policy.
The best feature about AD&D is it provides an added layer of protection incase if you possess other kinds of insurance. For instance, when you lose a part of your body in an air crash, you are covered by both travel insurance and AD&D. IF the loss of limb or eyesight or death occurs within a certain frame of time after the accident and if it is proved as a result of accident, then you would be paid the principal or full amount of the policy.
